GraphicalAbstract

In collaboration with Brad Smith's Lab in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame, a new paper led by Janeala Morsby and published in the Royal Society of Chemistry's flagship journal, Chemical Science, describes the synthesis and validation of a near-infrared FRED ratiometric fluorescent molecular probe for imaging hypoxia in cancer models. TIME Lab grad student Alice Burchett contributed to tumor spheroid studies showing that the probe - activated by nitroreductase activity, a consequence of cellular hypoxia - effectively penetrates large spheroids and enables 3-D optical sectioning to visualize individual hypoxic cells in real-time.
