Summer students in the TIME Lab have been firing on all cylinders! As their time in the lab comes to a close, four REU students presented their research at the Notre Dame 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium.

The summer projects and presentations were undertaken by:

  • Aoife McLoughlin (University of College Dublin) who was supported by a Naughton Fellowship and studied brain cancer multi-omics with grad student Maksym Zarodniuk.
  • Karyme Hernandez Torrens (Universidad de Puerto Rico, Mayaguez) who was supported by the CBE SMASH REU and studied 3-D macrophage models with grad student Alice Burchett.
  • Monica Leal Palma (Universidad de las Americas Puebla) and Samantha Yu (University of Notre Dame) were supported by NDnano NURF Fellowships, and created nanoparticles to target cancer-associated fibroblasts with TIME Lab grad student Julian Najera and Roeder Lab grad student Lan Li.
  • Destiny Stewart (University of Notre Dame) is a TIME Lab member and was supported by the Harper Cancer Research Institute Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship to continue her work on Indigenous cancer disparities with grad student Maksym Zarodniuk.
  • Grace McGraw (University of Notre Dame) recently graduated from the AME department, and spent the summer designing a microgravity simulator to support grad student Alice Burchett’s ongoing cancer research in space.
  • Triston Acher is a local high school student who was supported by the Harper Cancer Research Institute Research Cures Cancer Corps (RC3) program, and worked with grad student Julian Najera on nuclear mechanics in cancer-associated stromal cells.
